this is ktvu mornings on 2. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it is sunday august 25th. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. let's get over to rosemary. >> another nice day in store, once we get past the clouds, even patchy drizzle reported in some areas, and i think the bigger story at this hour is how much warmer we are, anywhere from 4 to 8 degrees warmer than where we started yesterday morning. ville those numbers coming for you. mostly sunny, slightly cooler conditions expected for the afternoon. as we get past today into the week we have a gradual warmup in store. i will line up these numbers coming up. developing news in union city, two people were killed in a shooting. alex savidge live this morning in union city to tell us what is happening right now. >> reporter: good morning. crime scene tape is still blocking off the number of streets here in this union city neighborhood. you can see crime scene technicians continuing to process this scene and gather

evidence. the body of one young man was removed a short timing a. according to police very few leads as they try and track down the person responsible for this double shooting that left two young men dead. someone heard gunfire early this morning, came outside and found these two men down in the street. let me show you some video from earlier this morning, just within the last half hour or so the coroner was out here and removed the body of one victim who died at the scene. the second victim was transported to the hospital but ended up dying there. the shooting was about 1:00 this morning right near 11th and d streets in union city. we spoke a short time ago with the police commander who told me at this point investigators don't have a lot to go on. they're trying to figure out what led up to this violence. >> at this point we're unsure of the motive. we're looking into every possible angle. we don't know the motive right now. we're looking for witnesses, anybody who may have seen or heard anything. >> to that end investigators

will be knocking on some of the doors in this neighborhood trying to talk with more people who lived nearby to figure out what they saw and heard. at this point there's no description on the shooter or the shooters that police are searching for this morning. thus far police are not identifying the two young men who were killed out here, and obviously we don't know exactly how old they were at the same time. it's been a long time since union city has seen this kind of violence according to police. i was just speaking with the commander and she told me these are the first two homicides here in the city so far this year, and there were no homicides here in union city during all of last year. police working hard to try to find the killer responsible here for taking the lives of two young men here overnight. live this morning in union city, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. san fransisco police are investigating a shooting inside a party bus. it happened at 2:15 this morning around 9th and folsom. no one was on the bus but they

found several shell casings. police are searching for the gunmen. a san jose neighborhood is on edge following a deadly attack caught bay security camera. ktvu obtained surveillance video of the shooting in the downtown area yesterday afternoon. the images are graphic. so we froze the video just before the first shot was fired. we then pick up as the gunman carrying what looks like an ax is running away. relatives of the victim 22-year- old ramon garcia says he leaves behind six young children. >> this is who i'm dating. i was dating him. he's not a bad person. >> investigators say they're trying to determine a motive or if the attacks gang related. witnesses told us they were too frightened to go on camera but say the shooting started with a fight and say someone hit ramon with an ax life weapon before he was shot and killed. the deadly stabbing and

shooting we told you about yesterday, 22-year-old carlos aldana stabbed his mother to death on friday night at her home in marin city. 44-year-old rosa aldana was found in the home by responding officers she died from multiple stab wounds. investigators say after killing his mother, aldana boarded a golden gate transit bus and headed to san fransisco. when they spotted him he was getting off the bus at fillmore and chestnut. he was armed with a knife and covered in blood and say officers shot him after he lunged at them. he is in serious but stable condition at san fransisco general hospital. when doctors clear him police say he will be booked on suspicion of murder. continuing coverage now of the rim fire burning near yosemite national park. firefighters are struggle to control the flames which have burned almost 130,000 acres. katie utehs is live in our newsroom with how firefighters plan to battle it today. >> the fire is only 7%

contained. crews have strengthened fire lines above the community of pine like mountain. their fight today will be a rough and uphill battle. cal fire says crews will focus their efforts on holding the fire east of the north fork of the too kwame river. at this point some 4500 homes and outbuildings are threatened as the fire burns into a second week. there are no reports of injuries and evacuees are staying at a red cross shelter. >> 15 minutes to get out of our house. we got our kids, our animals and a little bit of our pictures and paperwork we really needed. it was hard. >> the shelter has how how housed nearly 200 people forced from their homes. as of saturday afternoon some people who live in the pine mountain lake area were allowed to go home. with steep terrain and dry conditions the potential for the fire to spread is considered extreme. >> the concern there is that it's actually starting to back

down into some canyons that could make some big runs and that's where we get large fires to spread. >> some 2600 people battling the rim fire are also working to hold the eastern edge of the fire in yosemite national park. so far only remote wilderness area have been charred in the park. this fire has grown to the size of the city of chicago. coming up in my next report i'll share the impressive images of the fire taken from space. live in the newsroom katie utehs. yosemite national park is still open to visitors today. coming up in 30 minutes the effects of rim fire on tourism in the park, and the incentive for the public to visit there today. we are just days away from the bay bridge closure, and there are already traffic problems. now the full closure isn't going to happen until wednesday night, but right now three lanes of the toll plaza are shut down in preparation, and yesterday people trying to

cross the bridge ran into some huge backups. some drivers actually took to the shoulder risking a ticket while some other people got out and walked around. engineers say the toll booth work couldn't wait until the whole bridge is shut down because the work schedule is already packed. >> we have the other lane to do during the five days. we have to take out toll booth 17 and modify that island. >> engineers say the gridlock should be temporary. work on the toll lanes is expected to be finished by tomorrow morning, and the new eastern span is scheduled to open after the labor day weekend. again, that full closure will be wednesday night through tuesday morning, and you can stay up to date on the bay bridge and the conditions on all bay area roads by going to our web site which is ktvu.com. just look for the traffic tab at the top of the home page. a lot of traffic getting into san fransisco and probably also by seres point as the indy cars are going to be racing at sonoma raceway. what should they expect up in sonoma? >> it's going to be a nice

afternoon. right now we're dealing with mostly cloudy skies, even damp in some areas, patchy drizzle in some spots. a few scattered showers in the overnight hours. alex's video of union city, we saw some sprinkles falling because we do have a weak system moving through northern california, and again, that bringing the low clouds enhancing the low clouds as well as mid level clouds above these low clouds. a live look at mount diablo, it's tough to tell. these clouds are going to clear. we have mostly sunny skies for the afternoon. temperatures will be slightly cooler w. that cloud cover out there this morning, temperatures are up by several degrees. first a look at storm tracker 2 so you can see the clouds there for yourself. we are partly to mostly cloudy. over the north bay is where we have our best shot at seeing a few sprinkles, picked up some a little earlier around clear lake and lake county. some green showing up on the radar. even though we're not seeing the green on the radar hear,

locally patchy drizzle is falling. the coastline seeing a little bit. this is where the system primarily will spread that rain through the area. as we get into the afternoon we'll deal with mostly sunny skies or enjoy mostly sunny skies, and the rain won't be an issue for your sunday afternoon. it's going to be the here and now where we will see the possibility, patchy drizzle and maybe an outside chance of a few sprinkles. low 60s walnut creek. around the bay low 60s as well. you may notice these temperatures up from yesterday anywhere from 4 to 8 degrees in some cases. more like 8 to 10 degrees warmer in areas like napa, 57 in santa rosa. you are well above what we saw yesterday morning. see that moisture off the coastline, gray skies over the bay area and inland, but as we get into the afternoon it peels away where we will be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy remaining the entire day is going to be along the coastline. it doesn't really break away. you can expect that for your area. afternoon highs for today, 82 in fairfield, 77 for novato, 74

in san rafael. these temperatures slightly cooler than yesterday in most areas. 83 for walnut creek. 73 for san lee and row. temperatures ranging from upper 70s, morgan hill, mid-70s for santa cruz along the peninsula 72 san mateo. 64 in san fransisco. the extended forecast we have a gradual warmup as we get into the business week. takes us into tuesday, wednesday, when we finally get back to the seasonal average, the warmest day looks to be on thursday. back to the desk. searching for answers in a deadly shooting rampage, the multiple stops the gunman made and where the shooting spree finally ended. >> and a soldier receives the medal of honor from the president, why he is being honored and his ties to the bay area. >> but let's take you outside first to the toll plaza. you can see traffic moving along just fine. as we mentioned some lanes at that toll plaza are closed for work. right now no major problems. this is what we saw yesterday

syrian government. in an attempt to gain international support the regime is accusing the rebels of using chemical weapons on soldiers. the government released video of what it calls is a rebel hideout loaded with explosives, gas masks and plastic jugs used to build bombs. chuck hagel discussed the crisis. he refused to discuss what military action president obama might take. but he did outline the factors that could determine the type of response. >> the facts, what our intelligence assessment produces, law, legal issues, international support. >> hagel will spend eight days in asia with stops in indonesia and the philippines. a new reuters poll shows almost 60% of americans do not want to get involved in syrias war. of those that do, 12% support

air strikes. 1 1% supported enforcing a no fly zone. , 9% support funding a multinational innovation and 4% support invading with u.s. troops. a soldier with bay area roots will receive the highest military honor tomorrow. a 33-year-old army staff sergeant tie carter will receive the medal of honor. he saved the lives of soldiers during a taliban assault in afghanistan in 2009. he was born in spokane washington but spent his childhood years in antioch. carter will be only the fifth living recipient of the medal of honor for heroic service in iraq or afghanistan. authorities near jacksonville florida are trying to figure out why a man went on a deadly rampage that involved five different shooting scene. hubert allen junior used to work for a trucking company. yesterday morning he went to company headquarters and shot and killed a former co-worker. police say allen then drove a short distance and gunned down

his 80-year-old former boss. authorities also believe he went on to shoot two more employees elsewhere before returning home and committing suicide. >> all the people that were involved, mr. allen knew every one of them. we're totally shocked. the community's in shock. >> in all, three people were killed including the gunman. two more victims are in the hospital, one is in critical condition. there are reports that allen may have been recently fired. an antigun group based in newtown connecticut is trying to convince starbucks to change its weapons policy. starbucks says it follows local and state laws when it comes to whether or not customers can carry guns. newtown alliance has called for the company's ceo to ban all weapons. 13 family members of the deadly shooting signed the letter. family and friends gathered to honor the memory of

christina and ethan anderson. police found the remains of the mother and son in the burned out home of family friend james dimaggio. he also allegedly kidnapped hannah handerson, the two were found in a remote stretch of idaho wilderness. six days later dimaggio was shot and killed. hannah was rescued unharmed. yesterday's service was held at the family's church in san diego county. >> because it was a family friend it shocked everybody quite severely. it still will i'm sure. how do you get over that. >> teammates from ethan's football team took part in the service, some showing up in their uniforms. this morning friends of an australian athlete killed in oklahoma held a memorial baseball game in his hometown after a service yesterday at heights high school. oklahoma christian unit university. 22-year-old christopher lane was out jogging when he was shot in the back by three

teenagers, the oldest suspect allegedly told police they had nothing better to do. 2,000 people showed up at this morning's event in melbourne australian. california state prison guards could be getting a pay raise. a tentative contract has just been reached with the governor. the deal would give prison officers a 4 percent pay raise and would make it easier to earn overtime. it would also cut the number of weeks for cadet academy training from 16 to 12. that 2-year contract would expire in 2015. governor brown hasn't said if he's going to sign a bill that would allow u.s. legal immigrants to serve on a jury. it would give immigrants more rights and respondents. opponents argue allowing noncitizens to serve on juries could deprive the defendants of their right to have their case decided by a jury of their peers. richmond police are asking for the public's help to catch a mail teach. this image was caught on a home surveillance camera last week. it happened on wednesday afternoon on the east side of interstate 80. this is another look at the suspect. anyone with information is

asked to call richmond police. lake county sheriff deputies have arrested a convicted sex offender on charges of impersonating a federal officer. investigators say 66-year-old heck ton molinar pretended to be a u.s. marshal while talking to a suspected baa the are you victim thursday night. after arresting him authorities found a stash of law enforcement gear. it included a bullet proof vest, pellet guns that looked like real firearms, tasers and fake police badges. mountain view police are looking for a puppy stolen right out of a locked car. we want to show you a picture of 9 week old uso. police say he was stolen yesterday afternoon from a car parked on villa street near palo alto avenue. he's brown and black with tiger like markings and weighs about 9 pounds. his family says he's very friendly and are pleading with whoever has uso to return him. surfers and swimmers will be back in the water at simpson

beach after a great white sighting forced people to stay out of the water. the 15-foot long shark was seen attacking a seal. that forced them to close the beach for five days. overnight the national park service tweeted that the beach will be open to swimmers, surfers and boogie boarders but want you to remain on high alert and keep your eye out for sharks. alameda beach will have a lot more sand. the east bay regional park district will start a project to replace sand at the beach that has washed away over the years. crown beach is man made and park officials say new sand needs to be brought in from the bay about every 20 years. the $5.6 million project will take about three months to complete. people will still be able to access the beach during that time. >> your time now is 7:21, and it is a first for the united states. where the running of the bulls made its debut, and when you can see it all happen here in the bay area. >> outside our doors this morning, a bit of a gloomy

park hosted the first ever great bull run yesterday. organizers say about 12,000 people attended that event. many participants were slammed to the ground by the bulls, but only one person suffered minor injuries. >> i looked to face him, and i looked back, there they are. at that moment i was like all right, let's do this. >> while this may have been the first bull run in the united states, it will not be the last. the next run is scheduled for october 19th in atlanta. then next june it will be coming here to the bay area. meanwhile a drone that was shooting video of this historic bull rin ended up crashing into the crowd. it went down and hit a man in the face. that happened moments before the bulls started running. you can see people trying to help the victim there. it's unclear how badly he was hurt, but the video later shows him getting up and walking out of the stands on his own. a lot happening today, you've got indian sonoma, america's cup, 9ers out at the

stick, tonight rosemary and don't forget about those soccer games across the bay area starting up. >> that's right. another pleasant day in the forecast. for most slightly cooler for the afternoon. at this hour mostly cloudy and patchy drizzle falling in places. perhaps a little damp. be prepared for that, maybe you're going to the farmers market. as we get into the afternoon we're breaking away to sunshine, at least away from the coastline. we will be mostly cloudy once again along the coast. here's a look at what you can expect as you head out at this hour. temperatures in the upper 50s to upper 60s. a lot warmer than where we started yesterday morning with those clouds out there. by noontime 60 at the coach, mid-70s inland and for the afternoon we've got a nice day for most. we're talking low 60s at the coast, cool there, but around the bay, nice. upper 60s to low 70s, and inland cities we're looking at 85 degrees for some of the warmest locations. 78 for santa rosa, 75 in vallejo, 69 in oakland, 64 in san fransisco if you're going to see the giants play, 75 redwood city, 77 san jose, the

for 2 years with qualifying bundles rethink possible. an investigation now underway in union city after an early morning shooting leaves two young people dead. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. we want to update you on this developing news in alameda county. investigators are trying to figure out who shot and killed two people early this morning. the body of one of the victims was removed within the past hour, and ktvu's alex savidge has been talking to police and joins us with the latest information. >> reporter: good morning. union city police are still trying to figure out exactly what led up to this violence overnight. you can see behind me here streets still blocked off in this neighborhood. this is where two young men were shot and killed. they were both found right in the middle of the street. i want to show you what this

scene looked like about an hour or so ago when the coroner came in and removed the body of one of the victims. this young man was found at the scene and died out here. the second victim was taken to the hospital but did not survive his injuries. the shooting happened around 1:00 this morning near the intersection of 11th and d streets in union city. neighbors called up 9-1-1 about 1 in the morning to report gunfire and to report that someone had gone outside and found two young men who were down in the street. each of those victims had at least one gunshot wound and as of yet, police have not identified the two men who were killed out here. police commander told me as of late, homicides like these have been generally rare here in union city. >> anytime you have, you know, the death of anybody it's troubling, and so we'll do everything we possibly can to get this solved. >> these are in fact the first killings in union city so far this year, and the city didn't have any homicides during all

of last year. police right now are talking with neighbors and other potential witnesses as they try to solve this deadly double shooting here in union city overnight. live this morning in union city, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. a young woman is recovering this morning after being shot in the leg during an apparent robbery. it happened around 7:00 between full some and harrison in san fransisco's mission district. the victim appeared to be in his mid-20s. investigators believe the shooting may be connected to a nearby robbery, and police are hoping surveillance video may provide some answers into what happened. police have turned their attention to the oakland hills in the search for a missing toddler daphne webb, a team of about 45 investigators with cadaver dogs searched near mary college, but that search turned up nothing. police say they did find one area, though, they want to look at a little bit further, but they didn't say why. daphne's grandfather says watching investigators search for his 1-year-old grandfather was hard for him and his family.

>> us back to reality that not only is she missing, but, you know, some harm could have possibly happened to her. >> daphne was reported missing by her father john webb on july 10th. webb says he left daphne in a car with his mother who he says has dementia while he went inside a store in east oakland. daphne was gone when he returned. a $20,000 reward is being offered. a search is intensifying for a teacher from pennsylvania who vanished last month while backpacking in the eastern sierra. matthew green disappeared from the mammoth lakes area during a hiking trip with friends. on friday a hiker found a pair of glasses that may be greens. his friends and family posted a picture of the glasses on a facebook page that was recently set up to help find him. police plan to check the glasses to see if they match green's prescription. peace activists took to the streets of oakland yesterday to protest the killings of two young men. >> we want some peace in the

street. >> nearly a dozen people rallied on the corner of market street and sanford avenue. protesters held signs in honor of 17-year-old isaac johnson. both were shot and killed this summer. >> our pastor first said that people are getting killed and the fire department would come out and wash the blood off the sidewalk and after that everybody would go and that would be it. you know, so as families these are our children. >> the protest was organized by a group called soldiers against violence everywhere. and protests against russia's antigay law are set to get underway in san fransisco. one of the organizers of the protest is a group called boycott russian vodka and members have been holding demonstrations during which they pour out vodka. today's rally starts at 11 this morning outside st. nicholas russian orthodox church. back to our continuing coverage of the rim fire. here are the latest numbers

regarding that wildfire. it is 7% contained this morning. so far it has burned almost 130,000 acres, 11,000 of which is on the northwestern edge of the yosemite national park. more than 2600 firefighters are trying to put that fire out. this fire is reminding long time residents of the sierra foothills of a nightmare they experienced a quarter of a century ago. a rash of wildfires scorched hundreds of thousands of acres throughout the state in 1987. four firefighters were killed battling various fires. one firefighter was crushed by a falling tree. the yosemite park officials are urging potential visitors not to let the rim fire scare them off. labor day week is typically a pretty busy time for the year for the park, about 12 to 15,000 people are there this weekend. a handful of people who reserved lodges, though, have canceled, but so far the fire's impact on tourism has been minimal. as an added incentive the park is waiving its visitor fee.

firefighters are gaining ground on a wildfire burning in el dorado county near georgetown. the empire fire is 70% contained. it started about 3:00 yesterday afternoon this an area east of auburn off highway 193. it's burned 38 acres and destroyed one home. 80 other homes did have to be evacuated but residents have been allowed to return. cal fire says a blown transformer may have started that fire. dense smoke is causing problems in the reno area. officials have canceled several events because of pollution warnings. among the latest weekend event to be scrubbed a fund- raisingout door concert for cancer patients in carson city and a nevada usf women's soccer game in reno. an air ambulance company says poor visibility has prevented the reno based service from responding to emergency calls. thousands bay area residents are headed to reno this weekend for this year's bernie manifest value. it gets underway tomorrow. it brings about 68,000 people

to northern nevada's black rock desert. festival goers set up a massive tent city in that area. very colorful there, and then on saturday night a wooden man is torched. that bonfire is part of a tradition that started more than 20 years ago. and it could soon get easier to see just how much pollution is coming from the bay area's most congested freeways. air quality district managers are installing three pollution monitoring devices near busy freeways in berkeley, oakland and san jose. and starting in january, people can go to the district's web site to check pollution levels in those areas. the monitors are being installed as an epa mandated program. welcome and let's get right over to rosemary for a quick look to see how we are doing on this sunday morning. >> yes. this morning we're gray. we've got overcast skies, fog, a little patchy drizzle reported out there. temperatures for most up from yesterday. i think you will notice as you get outdoors this morning, it's going to feel a little muggy, and for some it is a little

this morning. 61 degrees reported in san fransisco. new this morning, former egyptian president hosni mubarak returned to court days prter being released from he sat in a ca in the courtroom along with his two sons. the hearing lasted three hours. the judge setting the next court appearance for september 14. mubarak is being retried on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during a 2011 uprising. the 85-year-old was found guilty last year but the life sentence was overturned. late last week he was released from prison and placed under house arrest. amanda knox plans to stay in america next month when she is retried in italy for the murder of her roommate six years ago. a lawyer will represent knox during the trial. however, it is possible italy could request that she be extradited. knox and her former boyfriend were convicted of murder in 2009, but that conviction was overturned two years ago for lack of evidence. in march italy's supreme court ordered the retrial.

celebrity chef paula deen will be making her first public appearance since her recent racial scandal. deen will be headlining the metro cooking and entertainment show in houston. while she may be the main attraction, ticket sellers are featuring lesser known chefs on their advertisements. organizers have seen a drop in ticket sales compared to previous years. donald trump's school for success may not be all it's cracked up to be. that's according to new york state's attorney general. the ag's office filed a lawsuit against trump university yesterday. the suit accuses the school of elaborate bait-and-switch practices that cost students thousands of dollars. the lawsuit says trump claimed to personally select experts in real estate to teach and to create the curriculum, but that never happened. a spokesman for trump says the law is politically motivated. now that embattled san diego mayor bob filner has agreed to resign, the race to place him has begun.

marin housing authority is hosting its first ever back to school celebration. the event will be tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at golden gate village in marin city. the goal is to encouraged increased school attendance and probably involvement. it will feature speakers, games, deejay and a barbecue dinner. the flu shot may protect against heart attacks in middle aged people. australian scientists say the shot could cut the risk of heart attacks almost in half. previous research suggests the flu can cause the blood to thicken which then leads to increased risks of blockages. however another recent study by the university of minnesota indicates shots provide only limited protection. and a new book says some goods may help protect from dangerous uv rays. according to the author of a clean eating for busy families, some foods act as a natural spf. those foods include tomatoes, dark chocolate, and carrots. the book's author said they absorb into the skin and

and a quick look at that forecast. >> good morning to you. it's a gloomy start, patchy drizzle -rt ared in some areas with -- reported in some areas, with those clouds out there we're off to a warmer start. mostly sunny skies, slightly cooler temperatures expected for the afternoon and a gradual warmup as we get into the workweek. i'm going to line up these numbers coming up. we begin with a developing story we told you about an hour ago. a second person has died in an early morning double shooting in union city. alex savidge joins us live from the scene with what police are saying about the investigation. alex. >> reporter: well, thus far union city police say they don't know the motive for this deadly double shooting. the shooter or shooters are still on the loose this morning, and you can see crime scene tape is still blocking off several streets here in this neighborhood right now. as this investigation continues. this is right where those two young men were shot and killed early on this morning. we'll show you what the scene looked like when we arrived here shortly after we got here. the coroner was here removing the body of one of the victims

who died at the scene. the second victim was taken to the hospital by paramedics but did not survive his injuries. now the shooting happened just about 1:00 this morning near 11 11th and d streets in union city. neighbors in this area called up 9-1-1, and they reported gunshots outside. someone did come outside and then found these two men down in the street. each victim had suffered at least one gunshot wound. so far police say they have not identified these two young men who were killed and police can't say at this point what, if any connection they had to this neighborhood. >> i can't release much. we know they're young men. we don't have an age, and at this point the coroner's office is -- we're working with them once the identity's made to the family we will release that information. at this point that information's not known. >> and the commander told me this morning, these are the first two killings in union city so far this year, and the city didn't have any homicides during all of last year. the commander said things have

been quiet for a long time. obviously they'll be working hard to try and track down the person responsible for this deadly double shooting. police will spend the morning talking with neighbors and potential witnesses trying to get any leads in this case. live this morning in union city alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. san fransisco police are investigating a shooting inside a party bus. it happened about 2:15 this morning south of market near 9 9th and folsom streets. when officer arrived they found several shell casings and a trail of blood. police are searching for the gunman and any possible victims. we have more details about the deadly stabbing and shooting we first told you about yesterday on mornings on 2. 22-year-old carlos aldana stabbed his mother to death on friday night at her home in marin city. the victim's roommate called police after returning home to find the crime scene in the living room. 44-year-old rosa aldana was found in the home by responding officers. she died from multiple stab

wounds. investigators say after killing his mother he boarded a golden gate transit bus and headed to san fransisco. u.s. park police say when they spotted him he was getting off the bus at fillmore and chestnut. police say he was armed with a knife and covered in blood and say officers shot him right after he lunged at them. he is in serious but stable condition at san fransisco general. when doctors clear him, police say he will be booked on suspicion of murder. a san jose neighborhood is on edge following a deadly attack that was caught by a security camera. ktvu obtained surveillance video of the shooting near 3rd and julian street in downtown san jose yesterday. the images are graphic, so we froze the video just before the first shot was fired. then we picked it up as the gunman takes off right there. it looks like an ax in his hand. relatives of the victim, 22- year-old ramon garcia say he leaves behind six young children. >> this is who i'm dating. i was dating him. he's not a bad person. he wasn't who people thought he

was. >> investigators say they are still trying to determine a motive and if the attack was gang related. witnesses told us they were too frightened to go on camera but say the shooting stemmed from a fight and someone hit garcia with an ax like weapon. we are days away from the closure and there are already major traffic problems. it isn't going to happen until wednesday night but three lanes of the toll plaza are shut down in preparation. yesterday people trying to cross that bridge, look at that, they ran into some huge backups. some drivers took to the shoulder like that one right there risking a ticket. other people just got out and walked around while they waited. the toll booth work couldn't wait until the toll bridge is closed because the work scheduled is already packed. >> we have the other lane to do during the five days. we have to take out toll booth 17 and modify that island.

here's a nice night for sore eyes, a glistening shot off the bay. what a beautiful picture there. we're waking up with mostly cloudy skies, but mostly sunny conditions, highlighting the afternoon. >> your time now is 8:14. authorities near jacksonville florida are trying to figure out why a man went on a deadly rampage that involved five different shooting scenes. investigators say the 72-year- old gunman hubert allen junior used to work for a trucking company. yesterday morning they say he went to company headquarters and shot and killed a former co- worker. police say allen then drove a short distance and gunned down his 80-year-old former boss. authorities also believe allen went on to shoot two more employees elsewhere. before returning home and

committing suicide. >> all the people that were involved, mr. allen knew every one of them. we're totally shocked. the community's in shock. >> in all, three people were killed including the gunman. two more victims are in the hospital. one is in critical condition. there are reports that allen may have been recently fired. an antigun group based in newtown connecticut is trying to convince star bucks to change its weapons policy. starbucks says it follows local and state laws when it comes to customers carrying guns. newtown alliance has posted a letter on its web site calling for the company's ceo to ban all weapons similar to what other companies have done. 13 family members of the deadly shooting at sandy hook elementary school in newtown have signed that letter. connecticut's attorney general wants the childhood records of the gunman responsible for the newtown school massacre. adam lanza went to a 1st grade class at sandy hook elementary school last december and opened fire. he killed 26 people at the school including 20 students.

connecticut's attorney general wants lanza's school records released so a special state investigation panel can examine the attack. this particular panel reviews unexpected and unexplained children's deaths. family and friends gathered to honor the memory of christina and ethan anderson in southern california. earlier this month police found the remains of the mother and son in the burned out home of family friend james dimaggio. police say dimaggio allegedly kidnapped christina's 16-year- old daughter hannah anderson. the two were found in a remote stretch of idaho wilderness six days later. dimaggio was shot and killed and anderson was rescued unharmed. yesterday's service was held at the family's church in san diego county. >> because it was a family friend it just actually shocked everybody quite severely. it still will i'm sure. how do you -- how do you get over that. >> teammates from ethan's football team also took part in the service, some showing up in

their uniforms. this morning friends of an australian athlete killed in oklahoma held a memorial baseball game in his hometown. it comes after a service held yesterday at his school. oklahoma christian university. christopher lane was out jogging when he was shot in the back by three teenagers, the oldest of the suspects told police they had nothing better to do. 2,000 people showed up at this morning's event in melbourne australia. a soldier with bay area roots will receive america's highest military honor tomorrow. 33-year-old army staff sergeant ty carter will receive the medal of honor from the president. carter saved the lives of federal soldiers during a taliban assault in afghanistan back in 2009. he was born in spokane washington but spent his childhood years in antioch. carter will be only the fifth living recipient of the medal of honor for heroic service in iraq or afghanistan. california state prison guards could be getting a pay raise. a tentative contract has been reached with the governor and the deal would give officers a

at this hour police remain at the scene of a deadly early morning shooting in union city. two young men were killed. good morning and welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. it is a developing story we have been reporting throughout this morning, and now an update on the investigation. ktvu's alex savidge live for us this morning in union city where he has been talking to investigators about what they have discovered so far. alex. >> reporter: well, good morning mike. union city police aren't sure at this point what prompted this deadly shooting overnight, but you can see the crime scene tape is still up in this neighborhood, and this is where two young men were gunned down in the middle of the street. we'll show you some video from earlier this morning as the coroner came out here and

removed the body of one of the victims who died at the scene. the second young man who was shot was taken to the hospital by paramedics but did not survive his injuries. the shooting happened right at 1:00 this morning near 11th 11th and d streets. neighbors called up 9-1-1 to report gunfire in the area and that's when someone went outside and found these two men down in the street. each victim had at least one gunshot wound and investigators right now are trying to figure out why they were targeted. >> at this point we're unsure of the motive. we're actually looking into every possible angle, but we don't know the motive right now. we're definitely looking for witnesses, anybody that may have seen or heard anything. >> and all morning long police have been talking with neighbors and other potential witnesses trying to develop some leads in this investigation. so far they have very few. these are the first two killings here in union city so far this year, and the commander i spoke with this morning told me the city didn't have any homicides during all of last year. so this is clearly an unusual

occurrence here. the two victims have not yet been identified and at this point police can't say what, if any connection they had to this particular neighborhood. live in morning in union city, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. a young woman is recovering this morning after being shot in the leg during an apparent robbery. it happened around 7:00 last night on 14th street between folsom and harrison in the san fransisco mission district. police say the victim appeared to be in her mid-20s. investigators believe the shooting may be connected to a nearby robbery and are hoping surveillance video may provide answer into what happened. police have turned their attention to the oakland hills as they search for a missing toddler, daphne webb a. team of 45 investigators with cadaver dogs searched near merit college, but the search turned up nothing. police did find one area they want to look at further but didn't explain why. daphne's grandfather says watching investigators search for his 1-year-old

granddaughter was hard for him is his family. >> us back to reality that not only is she missing but, you know, some harm could have possibly happened to her. >> daphne was reported missing by her father john webb on july 10th. he says he left daphne in a car with his mother who has dementia while he went inside a store in east oakland. daphne was gone when he returned. a $20,000 reward is being offered in this case. continuing coverage of the rim fire. we have just received new information about the damage it has caused so far. here are the latest wildfire numbers. cal fire says it's 7% contained this morning. here is the change. the fire has grown from a little more than 129,000 acres last night to nearly 134,000 this morning. about 11,000 acres are on the northwestern edge of yosemite national park, more than 2600 firefighters are trying to put out this wildfire. this fire is reminding long time residents of the sierra foothills of a nightmare they experienced more than a quarter

of a century ago. a rash of wildfires scorched hundreds of thousands of acres back in 1987. four firefighters were killed battling various wildfires. one firefighter was crushed by a falling tree. yosemite park officials are urging potential visitors not to let the rim fire scare them off. labor day week is typically a busy time of the year for the park. about 12 to 15,000 people are there this weekend. a handful of people who reserved lodges have canceled but so far the fire's impact on tourism is minimal. as an added incentive the the park is waiving its visitors fee. firefighters are gaining ground on a wildfire in el dorado county. the empire fire is 70% contained. it started at 3:00 yesterday afternoon in an area east of auburn off highway 193. the fire has burned 38 achier and tried one home.

-- and destroyed one home. residents have since been allowed to return. a blown transformer may have started that fire. dense smoke from wildfires are causing some problems in the reno area. officials have canceled several events due to pollution warnings. among the latest weekend event that was screw upped a fund- raising outdoor -- a fund- raising fund-raise -- poor visibility has prevented the reno based service from responding to responding to some emergency calls. tomorrow there is going to be a town hall meeting in sonoma county to talk about the expanse of the sonoma county airport. construction to extend the runway is scheduled to start next month. work is part of a federal mandate to make airports safer. concerns over noise and traffic will be discussed. it starts tomorrow night at 6:30 in the town council chambers. the project is expected to be finished by next fall. >> state lawmakers are considering a bill that could bring space tourism to california. the bill would protect

sandwiched in between the fog resting on the bay and low clouds drifting overhead. mostly sunny skies expected for the afternoon. coast guard officials in hawaii are trying to reunite fat dog right there, look at that face with its owner. yesterday a tug boat crew spotted that dog in the water struggling to swim. the dog was paddling in the middle of honolulu harbor. members of the boat crew say they immediately called the coast guard and a small rescue team pulled that dog from the water and took it back to the station. so far no one has claimed him. a search is intensifying for a teacher from pennsylvania who vanished last month while backpacking in the eastern sierra. matthew greene disappeared from the mammoth lakes area. a hiker found a pair of glasses that may begreen's. his friends and family posted a picture of the glasses on a facebook page set up to help find him. police plan to check the

classroom overcrowding. in past years budget cuts forced school districts to cut staff which means class sizes grew. with new funding from sacramento districts are budgeting for more teachers which they hope will bring class sizes down and improve overall education. the largest class sizes in the east bay were found in union city where schools averaged 34 students per class. a high school may soon require students and teachers to wear name badges. the principal for montgomery high school says the idea is in response to recent school shootings. the policy would help staff identify people who were not students. that'd help first responders know who belongs on campus in case of an emergency. if the school decides to go forward, enforcement could begin as early as next month. and so far reaction has been mixed. tomorrow assembly member nancy skinner and u.s. olympic swimmer dana volmer will call for equal access to federal meal programs in the oakland school district. they want congress to

investigators spent nearly 8 hours looking for clues and left the scene. detectives are working to track down the shooter who killed two young men this morning. one neighbor heard four gun shots and heard sirens as police raced to the scene. this was around 1:00 in the morning. the double shooting happened near 11th and d-streets. the men were found in the middle of the street, both with gunshot wounds, the coroner removed the body of one of the victim whose died at the scene and the second victim was taken to the hospital by paramedics but didn't survive. each victim with one gunshot wound according the police. investigators have few leads and don't know the motive for the killings. one man who heard the gunfire told me he is upset about what
